AI Overviews Are Eating Your Clicks. Here's How to Get Cited Anyway
//Quick Takeaways
  • AI Overviews and chat based answer engines now satisfy a growing share of searches without a single click to your site.
  • Ranking first no longer guarantees a visit. Getting cited inside the generated answer is the new prize.
  • Structured, extractable answers get quoted. Long marketing paragraphs get skipped over.
  • Schema markup, clear headings, and a direct answer near the top of the page make a page easier for a model to quote.

A search that used to end with a click now often ends with a summary. Google's AI Overviews sit above the traditional results and answer the question directly, and a growing share of searches never make it past that summary to a website at all. Ranking well still matters. It's just no longer the whole game.

What answer engines are actually doing

AI Overviews, and chat based tools like ChatGPT or Perplexity, don't summarize the entire web. They pull from a small set of sources for each answer and synthesize a response from that handful of pages. Being cited in that shortlist is now the goal, not just holding position one in the traditional blue links underneath it.

Write for extraction, not persuasion

A page that opens with three paragraphs of scene setting before it answers the question is easy for a human to skim past and easy for a model to skip entirely. A page that answers the question in plain language up front, then backs it up, gets lifted into the summary far more often.

  • Answer the question in the first paragraph, in plain language, before the backstory.
  • Use descriptive headings that match how people actually phrase the question, not internal jargon.
  • Back up claims with a specific number, date, or named source instead of a vague adjective.
  • Keep one idea per paragraph, so a model can lift it cleanly without dragging in an unrelated sentence.

That's where the direct answer needs to live. Everything after it is supporting detail an AI summary will happily skip.

Structured data still matters, maybe more than before

Schema markup, Article, FAQPage, HowTo, Product, and the rest, gives both classic search and AI answer engines clean, unambiguous data instead of asking them to guess the meaning of prose. A page with clearly marked up questions and answers is a far easier citation for a model to lift than a paragraph it has to parse and interpret first.

Track citations, not just rankings

Rank tracking alone doesn't tell the full story anymore. Ask the target question directly inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overview, and check whether your site shows up as a source. Treat that as its own metric, tracked alongside traditional rankings, not as an afterthought.

Ranking first and getting read are not the same job anymore.

None of this replaces solid SEO fundamentals. It sits on top of them. The pages that were already well structured, clearly written, and properly marked up are the ones picking up citations first.
